June 2014 Birchbox Reveal

I just received my June Birchbox in the mail and was extremely excited to find out what was inside. This month is full of travel ready samples that range from lotions to shampoos. The theme this month is travel since Birchbox recently teamed up with JetBlue. It is very fitting as quite a few of us will be venturing off on vacation.

1. Coola Tinted Matte SPF 30 for Face: This is a mineral-based tinted moisturizer with sun protection. It goes on smooth and creates a shine free finish. This is a great product for the summer months as it works to minimize oil production and shine. I really like the sheer finish and light feel. Unfortunately, there’s not much product in the sample. It was mostly air.

2. Gilchrist & Soames London Collection Body Lotion: This is an antioxidant-rich moisturizer with ingredients such as grape seed that help smooth and soften. It has a light scent and is not too thick while providing excellent moisture. It also creates a cool sensation. I like the product itself but wasn’t impressed with the presentation. The sample was messy and looked like it had already been opened.

3. Folle de Joie Eau de Parfum: This is a fresh blend of mandarin, rose, and sandalwood. It is a great light scent. I love the fact that the ingredients named can be easily distinguished without being overwhelming. Spritz on pulse points such as your wrists and neck.

4. Number 4 Hair Hydrating Shampoo & Conditioner: This is a sulfate-free cleanser containing botanicals and vitamins designed to repair and protect dry, brittle hair. One of the most frequent comments is about the fragrance, it is a little manly but it is fairly light. It is a good shampoo, although slightly pricey.

5. Vasanti Cosmetics BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator: This product mimics microdermabrasion and contains enzymes such as papaya as well as aloe vera, and coconut for cleansing. I love microdermabrasion in general. It is my must do in my skin routine. Again the presentation wasn’t great, the bottle was full of air and contained little product.

There was also a travel quiz with a chance to win a travel certificate with JetBlue. Overall, the content of the box was good. I wasn’t very impressed by the quality of some of the samples. They were messy, looked already opened and full of air. This is the first time I have been even slightly disappointed with Birchbox’s selections. My favorite is the Joie Parfum as I love good scents. It is a bit expensive but well worth it. I will update this post when I use the shampoo and conditioner.

Samples: Do they give an accurate picture?

We all love product samples. It is usually a free or cheap way of testing before buying. One thing I run across is most of the time the sample is not enough to get a clear picture of how the product will really work for you. This is particularly true for facial cleansers, moisturizers, shampoos and conditioners. Samples are really beneficial when determining what you don’t like.

Usually, with hair products, I will use it and initially my hair feels great. A week after buying it the product stops working and I wonder why I purchased that. With facial products, your face can react fairly strongly at first but that doesn’t mean the product is bad. It usually takes at least a week to see definable results, especially with a cleanser and you normally don’t get enough in the sample to test for that long.

As a marketing enthusiast I can tell you companies use small amounts for a reason. Smaller amounts tend to give really good results with regard to taste or performance. A famous example is the Pepsi Challenge. It was a blind taste test between Pepsi and Coca Cola and the announced winner was Pepsi. The reason is Pepsi is sweeter and subjects tended to choose it in small portions, however Coke is still the number one soda. This is because Pepsi is sweet and Coke is more drinkable it larger amounts.

There will be some products you try once and know immediately it’s not for you. There could be allergies you were unaware of or you see things you don’t like after one use. Samples can save you a bundle of cash by weeding out the products you may have been thinking about purchasing and pointing you in the direction of ones that work. If you aren’t careful you could spend a lot on trial and error.

There are always giveaways online and you can sign up for samples. This is also a way for companies to get your information to eventually use to market to you. I am a huge fan of my Birchbox subscription because for $10 a month I get a targeted number of larger samples and I don’t have to struggle through the weeds to find them. I get a great mix for a low price.

If you have a favorite way of getting samples please let us know. I love hearing from you!

May 2014 Birchbox Reveal

It is time for May’s Birchbox reveal. This is a little late but I wanted to use the products and be able to give a good review of them. I have yet to be disappointed by the selections put into my box. I am absolutely loving my subscription.

1. Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow: This is a great BB cream. It is hypo-allergenic and contains no fragrance. It boasts antioxidants and hydrating aloe. I really like this cream as I have combination/oily skin and so far my face has not become too oily while using it. The color matched my skin perfectly and gave it a nice glow.

2. Nexxus Color Assure Pre-wash primer, Shampoo & Conditioner: I have yet to use this line of products because I am waiting to get my hair re-colored to get the full effect. It is an oil-infused trio that is supposed to help keep color vibrant while being sulfate free. I will provide updates after use to let you know how it makes my hair look and feel.

3. Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm – Pixi Pink: This is a dual purpose balm that hydrates and provides a nice subtle pop of pink color. This could very well be my favorite product in this box. It has great hydration and not too much color. It is great when worn with a neutral eye as it does have a brighter color. I will definitely be carrying this around with me! I highly recommend it if you are looking for a lip balm with a little pop.

4. Supergoop! Everyday SPF 30 with Cellular Response Technology: This is a great light weight, water resistant SPF 30 protector. It will be great as a base when at the beach so you have SPF that is non-greasy on your face. It can also be used on the body. It is oil free and I have had no issues with it making my skin oily.

5. SmartyPants All-in-One Fiber Gummies for Weight Management: These vitamins are packed with fiber, have no caffeine and include omega-3 and vitamin D. The serving size is 6 with 50 calories. I am not a huge fan of how many calories are in a serving and I found the taste and texture a bit odd. At $47.59 for a bottle I will not be purchasing these.

If you have tried one of these products let us know what you think. I love hearing from you!

April 2014 Birchbox reviews

I recently received my second Birchbox for the month of April. This is a little late but I wanted to have a chance to try the products out first. I am still impressed by the variety and quality of the products in the box. The title is “Rainy Days” but the products inspire springtime and sunny days.

My April 2014 Birchbox
My April 201 Birchbox
  1. Beauty Protector: a leave in conditioner spray. Not only does it smell amazing but is is good for daily use and all hair types. It also touts many benefits including instant detangling, thermal protection, UV protection, seals cuticles, locks in color, adds shine, while being weightless and non-greasy. Spray generously on damp hair before styling.
  2. Color Club nail polish: Breakfast at…. It is the perfect spring shade that sports a little shimmer. Apply two coats and a top coat to keep it looking fresh.
  3. Yogini: by Harvey Prince. This is a stress-dissolving scent that is light, and crisp with notes of grapefruit and star jasmine. You will also find hints of sandalwood, and Egyptian myrrh mixed with natural essences and oils. I love perfumes and this is in the top running as my new favorite. It’s great for any occasion. Apply to pulse points.
  4. Sumita color intense pencil: Black. It is a soft wax liner that goes on super smooth for a long lasting, rich finish that won’t irritate eyes. This liner goes on so easy, it’s like a dream. You can blend it easily for a softer look.
  5. The lifestyle extra for this month is a KIND snacks healthy grains bar in Maple Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt. The bars are gluten free and all natural non GMO (genetically modified organisms). It is 150 calories for one bar and the list of ingredients is completely readable. These are great tasting and full of whole grains.

This was a great combination of products to get me ready for spring and the sunny days ahead. I was thinking about canceling my subscription but I will definitely give it at least another month. I am going to have to come up with a good storage system in the near future. Thank you for keeping me trendy!
